Why Aren’t Phones Waterproof?
The race to fully waterproof smartphones is underway. Several companies, including Samsung and Sony, are closer than ever to fully waterproofing their products. Unfortunately, they aren’t there just yet.
Why Aren’t Phones Waterproof?
Despite using waterproofing as a major selling point, these new phones are actually what we call water-resistant. As of now, full waterproofing is not possible because necessary components of your phone, including speakers and charging ports allow small particles of water to enter your phone.
To help you understand the capabilities of your phone, let’s answer three questions
- How is water resistance determined?
- What does a water resistance rating tell you?
- How can you protect your phone from water damage?
How Is Water Resistance Determined
Water-resistance is determined using an Ingress Protection (IP) rating. The rating is represented by two numbers. The first number represents the level of protection against dust, and the second number is the level of protection against water.
What Does a Water Resistance Rating Tell You?
For example, the newest Samsung phone has an IP rating of 68. The first number indicates that the phone is totally sealed against small particles. It is essentially possible for dust to get inside the phone and mess with its inner workings. The second number indicates that this phone can withstand immersion in water, which is why they claim the phone is waterproof.
However, you should keep in mind that there are still scenarios in which water could damage a phone with an IP 68 rating. If the phone is left in water for too long or exposed to too much pressure, water could still seep in and cause damage. As a result, you will want to treat even the most resistant phones with caution around water.
If your smartphone has an IP rating that is 67 or lower, then it should not be exposed to water at all if possible. It is essentially only rated to withstand light rain or the occasional sprinkle. Any submersion will likely cause permanent damage.
How Can You Protect Your Phone from Water Damage?
Smartphone protection suffers from many of the same limitations. There are some smartphone-sized box cases that are fully waterproof, but they are not designed to allow you to actively use your phone. These “cases” are only designed to store your phone safely away in a situation where it is highly likely that they will come into contact with water.
When it comes to usable smartphone cases, the best you can currently hope for is somewhat increased protection. ITSKINS covered port cases reduce the risk of accidental water exposure by physically blocking the ports that are most likely to allow water in. The port coverings have sealed doorways that can be easily opened along a hinge.
These smartphone cases may not protect your phone against all water damage, but they do give you precious extra seconds to rescue your phone from its impending doom.
Finding the Right Smartphone Case for You
Of course, covered ports aren’t the only feature you’re interested in. The good news is that smartphone cases are better than ever, boasting multiple safety features as well as honest commitments to the causes you choose to support during your daily life.
ITSKINS offers smartphone cases with all of these great features to choose from:
- Antimicrobial cases
- MagSafe compatible cases

On top of these extra features, ITSKINS cases boast drop certifications up to 10 feet thanks to HEXOTEK impact absorption technology and strategically raised edges. You can get all of these features in cases that match your aesthetic for the perfect case to fit your life.
